  1. The Law Commission of India, in its 276th report, has recommended legalisation of regulated betting and gambling activities, while asserting that a complete ban has not been returning the desired results. The report titled, “Legal Framework: Gambling and Sports Betting including in Cricket in India” read that having discussed both pros and cons of legalising regulated gambling and betting activities, it would be apt to say that the arguments in favour of the same far outweigh the arguments alluding to the immorality of these activities. The report stated that since it is not possible to completely prevent these activities, effectively regulating them would be the only feasible option.
  2. The Supreme Court on July 5, 2018 ruled that the Chief Justice of India is the “Master of Roster” who has the authority to decide on allocation of cases. The ruling was given by a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud. The Bench heard the petition despite two separate judgments by the Supreme Court in November 2017 and April 2018, upholding the CJI’s complete administrative authority to allocate cases and constitute Benches. Both these judgments were pronounced by Benches led by CJI Dipak Misra. “Master of Roster” refers to the privilege of the Chief Justice of India to constitute and allocate the benches to hear cases. The CJI has absolute discretion in the matter of distribution of judicial work among the judges of his court.
  3. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) has developed mobile app “GST Verify” to protect interest of consumers. It is android app to verify if the person collecting GST from consumer is eligible to collect it or not. It has been developed by B Raghu Kiran joint commissioner GST Hyderabad and can be used all across the country. CBIC is the nodal national agency responsible for administering Customs, GST, Central Excise, Service Tax and Narcotics in India. It is part of the Department of Revenue under Union Ministry of Finance headquartered in New Delhi.
  4. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) will set up “Design University for Gaming” in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. In this regard, UNESCO delegation has entered into an agreement with Andhra Pradesh Economic Development Board (APEDB). The Design University for Gaming will help UNSECO to develop edutech gaming in state, with the target of providing 50,000 jobs in 10 years. UNESCO is UN organization that helps preserve historical and cultural sites worldwide. It is special multi-country agency, formed in 1945 and based in France.

  5. An anti-corruption court in Islamabad sentenced former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison. His daughter Maryam Nawaz was sentenced to seven years and son-in-law Captain Safdar (retd.) to one year in jail. He was ousted from his third term as Prime Minister by the Supreme Court last year following the Panama Papers revelations that he had stashed assets abroad through offshore companies. The court banned him from politics for life.
  6. As many as 166 villages under 97 gram panchayats have been identified for implementing the Union government’s Mission Antyodaya scheme in Dakshina Kannada, according to M.R. Ravi, Chief Executive Officer of Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat. The scheme would be launched on October 2, 2018 and would be in force for two years thereafter. The villages have been identified based on the parameters related to infrastructure, human development and economic development.
  7. The Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India on June 26, 2018 released the 2011 Census data on Language and Mother Tongue.  The Language Census 2011 represents an updated linguistic scenario. As per the 2011 Census data, there is a rise in number of Hindi speakers, however, speakers of South Indian languages and Urdu dropped down. As per the 2011 census, 43.63 percent of Indians speak Hindi as their mother tongue. Except for Sanskrit, each of the 21 scheduled languages was reported as the mother tongue by at least 10 lakh people. Assam is the only major state that does not have any language group in a majority.
