  1. NASA’s asteroid sampling spacecraft OSIRIS-REx has captured first images of its target asteroid Bennu and began its final approach towards it after almost two-year journey. OSIRIS-Rex stands for Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security-Regolith Explorer. OSIRIS-Rex mission was launched in September 2016 for studying 101955 Bennu, a carbonaceous asteroid. Bennu is near-Earth carbonaceous asteroid about the size of a small mountain in the Apollo group. It was discovered in September 1999 by the LINEAR Project.

  2. India’s only aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya for the first time will be fitted with marine hydraulic system to boost the air operations of the ship. It will be fitted with two marine hydraulic systems whose technical terms go by “GS-1MF” and “GS-3”. GS-1MF and GS-3 will be used for refuelling, cleaning and pressurisation of hydraulic systems of aircraft and helicopters on board INS Vikramaditya which is based at its home port at Karwar in Karnataka.
  3. India’s first first-ever environment friendly biofuel powered flight between Dehradun and Delhi was propelled by blend of oil from jatropha seeds and aviation turbine fuel. The 43-minute flight was operated by SpiceJet’s Bombardier Q-400 aircraft. This plane had carried blend of 25% of bio jet fuel (derived from jatropha seeds) and 75% of aviation turbine fuel (ATF) in one of the two engines of plane, while other carried only ATF. Aviation biofuel derived from Jatropha seeds was indigenously developed by Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) lab based in Dehradun along with Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP).
  4. The fourth edition of Asian electoral stakeholders’ forum (AESF-IV) was held Colombo, Sri Lanka to discuss the state of elections and democracy in the region with the theme of ‘Advancing Election Transparency and Integrity: Promoting and Defending Democracy Together’. This was for first time AESF was held in South Asia. It was jointly organised by Election Commission of Sri Lanka and Asian network for free elections (ANFREL). India was represented by Chief Electoral Officer of Maharashtra Ashwini Kumar and NGO. ASEF is the largest gathering of election management bodies (EMBs) and civil society organizations (CSOs) in Asia. The first AESF was held in Thailand in 2012.

Asian Games 2018: (49 medals that includes 9 gold, 18 silver and 22 bronze)

  1. Manjit Singh won gold while Jinson Johnson won silver in the men’s 800m final. Manjit clocked 1:46:15 followed Johnson at 1:46:35 to make it a double for India. A gold-silver double was achieved earlier by sprinters Ranjit Singh and Kulwant Singh in 1951.
  2. India won silver medal in the first ever 4x400m mixed relay in the history of Asian Games, with Bahrain clinching the gold. The Indian team represented by 400m silver medallist Muhammed Anas who started the race, followed by MR Poovamma, Hima Das and then Arokia Rajiv.
  3. India clinched their first ever table tennis medal in Asian Games history as the men’s team bagged bronze after losing in the semi-finals. G Sathiyan, Achanta Sharath Kamal and A Amalraj lost their respective matches against South Korean. India had clinched men’s table tennis team gold at Commonwealth Games earlier this year.
  4. Indian shuttler PV sindhu had to settle for silver after she lost to Chinese Yin in straight sets as 13-21, 16-21. Despite the loss, Sindhu became the first badminton player to win silver in Asian Games.
  5. The Indian men’s archery team bagged silver medal in the men’s compound event after losing the shoot-off in the final against South Korea. Rajat Chauhan, Aman Saini and Abhishek Verma represented India in the event.
  6. Indian women’s archery team won the silver medal in the compound event for the first time in the Asian Games history. The trio of Muskan Kirar, Madhumita Kumari and Jyothi Surekha Vennam lost to South Korea 228-231 to finish second. India had clinched bronze in the event in the 2014 edition.
  7. India’s Dharun Ayyasamy broke his own national record in the men’s 400m hurdles to bag silver at the Asian Games 2018. Ayyasamy clocked 48.96 seconds. Further Neena Varakil and Sudha Singh also won silver medals in women’s long jump and 3000m steeplechase events respectively.
  8. Neeraj Chopra with a throw of 88.06m broke the national record and clinched the much-awaited gold. With the win, he became the first Indian javelin thrower to win an Asiad gold.  The 20-year old had also become the first Indian to bag gold in Javelin throw at the Commomwealth Games earlier this year.
