- The 2022 G20 Summit will be hosted by India in the 75th year of its independence. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the ongoing G20 meet in Buenos Aires, capital of Argentina. During the Buenos Aires G20 meet, India presented a nine-point agenda to the G20 countries calling for strong and active cooperation among them to comprehensively deal with fugitive economic offenders. G20 is a premier forum that comprises of a total of 19 countries, excluding the European Union. Its members include Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, India, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Turkey, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America and European Union. Started in 1999, it has become a forum for international economic cooperation and decision-making for governments and central bank governors to focus on economic issues and other important development challenges.
- A six-member committee has been constituted by the Union Government to look at selling as many as 149 small and marginal oil and gas fields of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) and Oil India Ltd. (OIL) to private and foreign companies to boost domestic output. It will be headed by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar. The committee was constituted after the Prime Minister had sought to review domestic production profile of oil and gas and the roadmap for cutting import dependence by 10% by 2022.
- Vashkar Bhattacharjee, a Bangladeshi disabilities’ advocate and Tencent (China), a private sector ICT enterprise, were awarded the UNESCO/Emir Jaber al Ahmad al Jaber al Sabah Prize for Digital Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. They were awarded for their outstanding contribution to empowerment of persons with disabilities through application of information and communication technologies to access information and knowledge.
- The first India-ASEAN InnoTech Summit was held in New Delhi. It was organized by Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in association with the Department of Science and Technology and the Ministry of External Affairs. ASEAN comprises of 10 South-East Asian countries and promotes inter-governmental cooperation. India is a full dialogue partner of the ASEAN.
Abhinav Bindra - Abhinav Bindra was awarded the coveted International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Blue Cross. With this, he becomes the first Indian to be awarded the Blue Cross, apart from being the only individual Olympic gold medalist from India. He had won the Olympic gold medal in 2008.
- The Chief Guest at India’s 70th Republic Day celebrations on 26th January 2019 will be the President of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa. Earlier, Donald Trump had declined the invitation due to “scheduling constraints”. The celebrations honour the date on which the Constitution of the country came into effect i.e. 26th January 1950 and had replaced the Government of India Act, 1935. The Purna Swaraj (Declaration of Indian Independence) was proclaimed on this date in 1930 at the Lahore session of the Indian National Congress.
- The International Day for the Abolition of Slavery is observed every year on December 2nd with an objective to raise awareness about slavery and its impact on the society. It marks the adaptation of the resolution ‘Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Prostitution of Others’ by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on 2nd December, 1949.
