  1. Elon Musk’s SpaceX on December 3, 2018 launched its Falcon 9 rocket carrying 64 (15 micro-satellites and 49 CubeSats) small satellites into low orbit around the Earth. The rocket blasted off from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California carrying satellites from 34 different companies, government agencies and universities, including the University of Illinois.

  2. Veteran leftist leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador was sworn in as the 58th President of Mexico on December 1, 2018. The 65-year-old would hold the post for a term of six years. Lopez Obrador graduated from the National Autonomous University of Mexico in 1986. He began his political career in 1976 as a member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) in Tabasco. In 2012, he left the PRD and in 2014 founded the National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), which he led until 2017.
  3. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had appointed Ajay Narayan Jha, a 1982 batch IAS officer from Manipur cadre, as the expenditure secretary in October. Before that, he was the environment secretary. Jha replaces Hasmukh Adhia, who retired on November 30. The Unique Identification Authority of India Chief Ajay Bhushan Pandey had earlier replaced Adhia as revenue secretary.
  4. Pawan Singh has become the first Indian to be elected one of seven members of the Judges Committee of the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF). Singh also holds the post of the Joint Secretary General of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI). The ISSF elections take place every four years. Prior to Singh’s appointment, NRAI’s President Raninder Singh had become the first Indian to be elected as Vice President of ISSF.
  5. The four-day International conference on bears began in Agra, Uttar Pradesh on December 4, 2018 with an aim to sharing knowledge on the principles of the welfare of bears and other wild animals in zoos, sanctuaries and rescue centres. It has been Hosted by Wildlife SOS in collaboration with Bear Care Group from the US and Canada.
