  1. The consultancy Agency, Mercer, released the Quality of Living Index 2019 based on the data analysed between September and November 2018 in 231 cities. Austrian capital Vienna tops the index of most liveable cities for the 10th year in a row. San Francisco with the ranking of 34 was named the best city to live in the U.S. London with a ranking of 41st was the best city in the UK. Singapore with a ranking of 25th has held onto its status as Asia’s most livable city. Chennai topped the list among the Indian cities with a rank of 105 followed by Bengaluru with a rank of 149.
  2. All England Open Badminton Championships 2019 was held at Arena Birmingham in England from 6 to 10 March 2019. It is the 6th tournament of the 2019 BWF world tour. Being organised annually since 1899, it is the world’s oldest badminton tournament. Winners of 2019 championship are: Men’s Singles-Japan’s Kento Momota and Women’s Singles-China’s Chen Yufei.

  3. President Ramnath Kovind conferred the Gallantry Awards and the Distinguished Service Decorations as part of the Defence Investiture Ceremony- 2019 to Armed Forces Personnel. Among the recipients Army Chief General Bipin Rawat was presented the Param Vishisht Seva Medal and Major Tushar Gauba was awarded the Kirti Chakra and Vice Admiral Sunil Anand was given the Nao Sena Medal. The government of India constituted Gallantry Awards on 26th January 1950.
  4. IIT Kharagpur has signed an MoU with Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) to set up a 1.3 Petaflop high-performance computing facility and data centre funded under the National Supercomputing Mission. PetaFlop is the measurement of computing power based on the frequency of mathematical calculations that can be done per second. National Supercomputing Mission initiated in 2015 is being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs.4500 crore over a period of seven years.
  5. The first Africa-India Joint Field Training Exercise (AFINDEX-19) between the Indian Army and 16 African nations will be conducted in Pune from March 18 to 27. AFINDEX-19 aims to train the participating contingents in Humanitarian Mine Assistance (HMA) and Peace Keeping Operations (PKO) under the United Nations Charter. The joint exercise will also focus on achieving interoperability, learning each other’s methodologies and tactics.
  6. The World Sleep Day was observed across the globe to raise awareness regarding sleep disorders and promote their prevention and management, on March 15, 2019 with the theme ‘Healthy Sleep, Healthy Aging’. The day is observed annually on the Friday before the March Equinox on the Earth. The first World Sleep Day was held on March 14, 2008. It has been organised by the World Sleep Day Committee of the World Sleep Society.
  7. The World Consumer Rights Day is observed across the world on March 15, 2019 with an aim to promote basic rights of consumers and to ensure that these rights are respected and protected. This year, the Day called for access to secure internet for all with a theme ‘Trusted Smart Products’. The first World Consumer Rights Day was observed in the year 1983. US President John F Kennedy was the first world leader to formally address the issue of consumer rights March 15, 1962.
