- In annual competitiveness rankings released by International Institute for Management Development (IMD), India has moved up one place to rank 43rd (from its 44th position in 2018, 45th in 2017 and 41st in 2016) most competitive economy in world. Singapore topped the list this year followed by Hong Kong and US. Started in 1989, it ranks 63 economies on 235 indicators which are incorporated from each of these economies.
- The International Everest Day is observed every year on 29 May to commemorate the first summit of Mt. Everest on 29 May 1953 undertaken by Sir Edmund Hillary from New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa from Nepal who became first humans to achieve the feat. In 2008, the Nepal government decided to observe day as International Everest Day. Mount Everest is the world’s highest mountain above sea level with Elevation of 8,848 m.
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) constituted a committee under Harsh Vardhan, Senior Advisor in Bain & Company, to review existing state of mortgage securitisation in India and suggest measures to develop market further. The six member committee shall submit its report to RBI by the end of August 2019.
- National Democratic Alliance leader Narendra Modi was sworn in as Prime Minister for the second consecutive term on 30 May, 2019. President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of Office and Secrecy to him. One-third of the total ministers in the Cabinet are first-timers, including BJP president Amit Shah and former Foreign Secretary Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
- World No Tobacco Day is observed annually on May 31, 2019 by the World Health Organization (WHO) and its global partners to raise awareness on the harmful and deadly effects of tobacco use and second-hand smoke exposure and to discourage the use of tobacco in any form. The main focus of World No Tobacco Day 2019 is on “tobacco and lung health.”
- India’s Anita Bhatia has been appointed as the new Assistant Secretary-General for resource management, sustainability and partnerships and Deputy Executive Director of the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). Bhatia has previously served at several senior leadership and management positions at the World Bank.
- Former Defence Minister, Nirmala Seetharaman has been appointed as the India’s first full time woman finance minister after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who held the same portfolio for just one year (July 1969 and June 1970). Former Home Minister Rajnath Singh has been appointed as new Defence Minister while former Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar will take care of External Affairs Ministry. Amit Shah has been appointed as Home Minister.
