Sarthak Wadhwa

I was midway through Class 9th when I realized that law was the field for me. I had always been told that I was a good speaker, had decent analytical skills and a sharp memory – all qualities that would help me become a good lawyer, in the opinion of those who had a very superficial view of what lawyers did (including me). But as the wheel of time turned and I learnt more of the injustices and biases that permeated the society around me that I was privileged enough to occupy, my perspective on law changed, and my desire to become an advocate of the law grew organically. It may have started as a violent rejection of the traditional trifecta of Doctor-Engineer-MBA, but my decision to become a lawyer grew into a resolve to study from the best Law School in the country, with some of the best minds of my time, to become someone greatness can vest within, in due course of time. It was this resolve that made me study hard for a mythical, enigmatic college, at the time, that was the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru.

My CLAT preparation was streamlined with only one goal in mind – “The” Law School. I gave up on several hours of school life shenanigans to prepare for CLAT, several parties went unattended, several gatherings were left abruptly and several festivals were marred by the looming figures of General Knowledge and Current Affairs. After attempting, documenting and analyzing what may have been a bazillion mocks in retrospect, I have realized just one thing: Had I not made the sacrifices I made, had I not attended classes even during my board exams, had I not worked myself off trying to perfect my weakest areas (English and GK), I would not be writing this testimonial from my hostel, in the college of my dreams (cliché, yet the absolute truth). If there is any advice that I can give to anyone who chooses to get inspired by my journey, it is this: The nights will be long, and days will be longer, but the light at the end of the CLAT tunnel could not have been brighter. To end on another cliché note – “Shoot for the Moon and you will land amongst the stars” – as I did, now secure and shiny in my own twinkle – still excited about being part of the community and legacy of the National Law School of India University.
