- In a first ever movement of its kind, an Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) ship carrying Bhutanese cargo was flagged off from Dhubri in Assam to Narayanganj in Bangladesh over the Brahmaputra River and the Indo-Bangladesh Protocol Route. It was digitally flagged-off by Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State for Shipping (Independent Charge) and Chemical & Fertilizers. In the return journey of the vessel, Bangladesh will send jute and rice to Bhutan in the same vessel.
- Every year, France celebrates 14th July as National Day of France, also known as Bastille Day, to commemorate the anniversary of Storming of the Bastille in Paris that signalled the start of French Revolution on 14th July, 1789. French Republic was formed in 1792. Every year, Bastille Day Military Parade takes place in morning of 14th July in Paris. The first parade was in 1880. French National day is formally called as La Fete Nationale in France.
- Foundation stone of the Baba Guru Nanak University (BGNU) was laid at Nankana Sahib, in Pakistan’s Punjab province by the Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar. This comes ahead of the beginning of the International Nagar Kirtan by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on 25th July. Nankana Sahib is the birth place of the founder of Sikhism, Baba Guru Nanak Dev. The establishment of BGNU is part of Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan’s vision to facilitate students in Nankana Sahib and other adjoining districts.
- The 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup will be held in India from February 9 to March 26, 2023. It will be the 13th edition of the men’s Cricket World Cup and will also mark the first time that the tournament will be solely hosted by India. The country has previously hosted the tournament thrice (1987, 1996, 2011), but every time co-hosting it with its Asian neighbours. England has hosted the most number of World Cups – 5 in total (1975, 1979, 1983, 1999 and 2019).
- Union Government on 15th July, 2019 denied any move to convert the Nehru Museum Memorial and Library situated in New Delhi as a monument for all former Prime Ministers of India. Culture and Tourism Minister Prahlad Singh Patel said that the government has approved a proposal to set up a new Museum on the Prime Ministers of India in Teen Murti complex. He said that the museum is likely to be commissioned by October next year.
Great Indian Bustard - Taking serious note of the alarming extinction of two Indian birds, the Great Indian Bustard and the Lesser Florican, the Supreme Court has constituted a high powered committee to urgently frame and implement an emergency response plan for the protection of these species. The plea has contended that over the last 50 years, the population of the Great Indian Bustard has recorded a decline of over 82 per cent. It said that the population of the Lesser Florican has seen a sharp decline of 80 per cent, over the past few decades.
- India remained at the top of the medals’ tally with 14 medals – six gold, six silver and two bronze – at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. In the Men’s 50 metres Pistol event, Gaurav Rana claimed the top honours, while Arjun Singh Cheema settled for silver. The duo also combined with Vijayveer Sidhu to pick up the gold in the team event. In the women’s 10m Air Rifle event, Elavenil Valarivan claimed the top honours with a total score of 251.6, while Mehuli Ghosh from India settled for silver with 250.2 points.
