  1. The Lok Sabha passed the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2019 that prohibits commercial surrogacy, but allows altruistic surrogacy. In India, there are about 2000 to 3000 surrogacy clinics running illegally. Commercial surrogacy is banned in many countries including New Zealand, United Kingdom, China, South Africa, Spain, and Switzerland.
  2. Rajasthan Prohibition of Interference with the Freedom of Matrimonial Alliances in the Name of Honour and Tradition Bill, 2019 that makes honour killing punishable by death penalty or life imprisonment, has been passed by the Rajasthan Assembly. It is the first state in India to have a special law to deal with hate crime against couples.
  3. External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar will be on a three-day visit to China from 11th of August. During his first visit to China, the External Affairs Minister along with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi will co-chair the second meeting of the India-China High-Level Mechanism on Cultural and People-to-People exchanges in Beijing.
  4. The Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) conferred the Lifetime Achievement award on Arun Lal, a former India cricketer. The 63-year-old played 16 Test matches and 13 One-Day Internationals for India between 1982 and 1989. Lal won a battle against jaw cancer and was coaching Bengal.
  5. The Kosi-Mechi Interlinking project, at a cost of Rs. 4900 crores, for interlinking of Kosi and Mechi rivers of Bihar, has been approved by the Union Cabinet. After the Ken-Betwa project in Madhya Pradesh, this is the second major river interlinking project in the country. It envisages diversion of a part of the surplus water of Kosi River through existing Hanuman Nagar barrage to Mechi River of Mahananda basin.

  6. Maharashtra Government’s initiative ‘Mission Shakti’ has been launched by film actor Aamir Khan. The initiative aims to train athletes from tribal areas for international sports events such as the Olympics. The mission is focused on 6 sports – archery, shooting, volleyball, swimming, weightlifting and gymnastics. Currently, the programme is being implemented in Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts.
  7. US designated China as a ‘currency manipulator’ for the first time since 1994, after China allowed its yuan to weaken past the key seven-per-dollar level for the first time in more than a decade. “Currency manipulator” is a term, which is generally used by United States Department of the Treasury to designate countries that engage in a certain degree of currency intervention, which is basically a monetary policy operation when a government or central bank buys or sells foreign currency in exchange for their own domestic currency.
