  1. National Institution for Transforming India (NITI) Aayog released the School Education Quality Index (SEQI), which evaluates the performance of states and union territories in the school education sector. Among large states, Kerala has recorded the highest incremental performance with a score of 77.6% in 2015-16 to 82.2% in 2016-17. Among small states, the incremental performance was shown by Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Goa. NITI Aayog was established in 2015.
  2. Air Chief Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria took charge as the new Chief of the Indian Air Force (IAF) from Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa, who retired after 41 years of service in IAF on 30th September, 2019. He is now the 26th Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force.
  3. World Heart Day is observed every year on 29th September, 2019 to educate people that by controlling risk factors such as unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and tobacco use, 80% of premature deaths caused by Cardio Vascular Diseases (CVD) can be avoided. Founded in 2000, World Heart Day is an initiative of the World Heart Federation. According to the World Health Organization, around 18 million people die of CVD every year.
  4. The Union Ministry for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) has made changes to Apprenticeship Rules, 1992 as the Apprenticeship (Amendment) Rules, 2019. It aims to increase skilled manpower in the country. As per it, the minimum stipend payable to trade apprentices would range from Rs. 5000 to Rs. 9000 per month. The MSDE Ministry has also launched ‘Apprenticeship Pakhwada’, a 15-day cross-country event aimed at driving widespread awareness of the Apprenticeship.

  5. Saraswati Samman Award 2018 was conferred upon K Siva Reddy, a Telugu poet for his collection Pakkaki Ottigilite, published in 2016. It was instituted by the KK Birla Foundation in 1991. It is an annual award for outstanding prose or poetry literary works in any of the 22 languages of Indialisted in Schedule VIII of the Constitution of India. The award is the highest recognition in the field of Indian literature.
  6. The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is going to offer tourist visas for the first time as a part of a push to diversify its economy away from oil. Saudi has five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, a vibrant local culture and breathtaking natural beauty. Saudi Arabia began issuing visas to visitors for attending cultural and sporting events in 2018.
  7. The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has named a minor planet that was discovered on 11th November, 2006, between Mars and Jupiter after Indian classical singer Pandit Jasraj. He is the first Indian musician to receive this honour. The number that was given to Pandit Jasraj’s planet by IAU was 300128, which is the reverse order of his date of birth 28/01/30. He had also previously received the Padma Vibhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi awards. The IAU was founded in 1919.
