  1. India Economic Summit is being organised by the World Economic Forum in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on 3rd and 4th October, 2019 in New Delhi. The summit will be co-chaired by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat and Sania Mirza representing UN Women. The theme for the summit is ‘Innovating India: Strengthening South Asia, Impacting the World’. The WEF was founded in 1971 in Cologny, Geneva, Switzerland.
  2. The second edition of the informal summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jingping will be held in Mamallpuram, Tamil Nadu. Mamallpuram, also known as the Seven Pagodas or Mahabalipuram, was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The first informal meet between the leaders was held in Wuhan, China in April 2018.
  3. Sachin Tendulkar has been awarded “The most effective Swachhata Ambassador” at the Safaigiri Awards 2019. The former Indian Cricketer was chosen as he utilized his fame and popularity to ensure India achieved its goal of Swachh Bharat. Safaigiri Awards is an initiative of India Today group to celebrate the champions of Clean India campaign. This is the fifth award function organized by the group.
  4. On the occasion of the 150th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, ‘The Gandhian Challenge’ for school children was launched by the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI Aayog’s Atal Tinkering Labs (ATL) and UNICEF India, including Generation Unlimited. It provides a platform for every child across India to ideate innovative solutions for a sustainable India of their dreams, using Gandhi’s principles. Generation Unlimited is a new UNICEF-led global partnership that aims to ensure that every young person of ages 10 to 24 is in some form of learning, school, self-employment, training, or age-appropriate employment by 2030.

  5. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the appointment of Surjit S Bhalla as the Executive Director for India on the board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a period of three years. The 71-year old Bhalla will succeed former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor Subir Gokarn, who died in the US on July 30th after a brief illness.
  6. The International Day of Older Persons is observed every year on 1st October to highlight the contributions made by the older population to the society and raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges of ageing in the world. The theme for this year is “The Journey to Age Equality”. On 14th December, 1990, the United Nations General Assembly (by resolution 45/106) designated 1st October as the International Day of Older Persons.
  7. Union Consumer Affairs Ministry launched a mobile app called ‘Consumer App’ to help consumers across the country register their grievances online as well as to provide suggestions on several consumer-related issues. Developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), it is a step towards achieving the objective of Digital India. The Ministry will process the complaints for redressal for nearly 250 categories of products and services.
