  1. The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry launched the Food Safety Mitra Scheme, to scale up the Eat Right India movement, on 16th October, 2019 to mark World Food Day. The scheme will support small and medium scale food business. The Food Safety Mitra will undergo training and be certified by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).

  2. The Golden Shoe for the 2018-19 season has been awarded to Barcelona FC captain Lionel Messi for being the top scorer in the European leagues with 36 goals (in 34 games). This is his sixth Golden Shoe and also, he has won the trophy for the third consecutive year. Originally called the Soulier d’Or, the European Golden Shoe was created in the 1967–68 season.
  3. The Union Ministry of Tribal Affairs launched the Van Dhan Internship Programme on 17th October, 2019 that will train interns who will help the tribal population in becoming self-reliant and entrepreneurs. The Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED) under the ministry will organize the program. The TRIFED was established in 1987 to provide good price for the goods and products made or collected by the tribal people.
  4. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) honoured 46 biomedical scientists who have done pioneering work in the area of health research to solve various health issues. A total of 39 awards for 2017 and 2018 were presented to 46 scientists, including 14 women scientists.
  5. The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP) is celebrated every year on 17th October to recognize the struggles of the impoverished and to make the voices of the poor heard by governments and ordinary citizens. This year, the theme was ‘Acting together to Empower Children, their families and Communities to End Poverty’. The day was declared by the United Nations in 1992. According to the United Nations, there are 783 million people living below the international poverty line, which is 1.90 USD per day.
  6. The 2019 Global Hunger Index (GHI) has been jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe to comprehensively measure and track hunger at global, regional, and national levels. This 14th annual publication measures hunger in 117 countries out of which 43 countries have levels of hunger that remain  India was ranked 102nd, the lowest among South Asian countries. Among the BRICS nations, Brazil topped with 18th rank, followed by Russia (22), China (25), South Africa (59), Sri Lanka (66), Nepal (73), Bangladesh (88), Pakistan (94) and India (102). India’s child wasting is extremely high at 20.8%.
  7. Shinyuu Maitri, a joint military exercise between the Indian Air Force (IAF) and Japanese Air Self Defence Force (JASDF) will be held from 17th to 23rd October, 2019 at the Air Force Station, Arjan Singh in Panagarh town, West Bengal. It aims to undertake Joint Mobility and Tactical inter-operability among two forces. It was first conducted in 2018.
  8. World Students’ Day is celebrated every year on 15th October to commemorate the birthday of former president APJ Abdul Kalam, who was a dedicated teacher and identified himself foremost in that role before anything else. Known as the Missile Man, Kalam was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1981, Padma Vibhushan in 1990 and Bharat Ratna and received seven honorary doctorates from 40 Universities. In 2010, the United Nations declared 15 October as “World Students’ Day”.
