- Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) released its State of Climate Report for the year 2019 on 7th January, 2020. 2019 was a year of extremes – heat, cold, rain, and cyclones for India, killing a total of 1,562 people. 2016 was the hottest year of the decade. The mean temperatures remained 0.36 degrees above normal, making 2019 the seventh hottest year ever recorded.
- A high-level committee under Home Ministry approved the release disaster relief fund of Rs 5,908 crores from National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) to seven states- Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Gujarat, Kerala and Uttarakhand. The National Disaster Respond Fund was established under the disaster Management Act, 2005. It is defined under Section 46 of the act.
- The 12th edition of the bilateral maritime exercise ‘Naseem Al Bahr’ between India and Oman will be conducted in Mormugao Port, Goa. Two ships of Royal Navy of Oman (RNO)- RNOV Al Rasikh and RNOV Khassab- and Indian Navy ships- Beas and Subhadra– will participate in the exercise. ‘Naseem-Al-Bahr’ (or sea breeze) is a naval exercise between the Indian Navy and the RNO, being conducted since 1993.
- Farmers Science Congress was organised for the first time on the sidelines of the 107th Indian Science Congress that was held from 3rd to 7th January, 2020 in Bengaluru. Farmers Science Congress highlighted the importance of farmer’s innovations and their scientific validity. On the sidelines of ISC, Yoga Science Meet was also organised on 5th January, 2020 which discussed how Yoga helps insulate from diseases.
- Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) on 6th January, 2020 proposed 2,700 crores of infrastructure plans to construct its first Human Space Flight Infrastructure Centre (HSFIC) in Challakere, Karnataka. It will provide the facility for training of astronauts to manned missions. As per the proposal, the centre will start functioning within the next three years.
- Mizoram government is organising Zo Kutpui festival in at least 10 states across India and countries such as US, Myanmar and Bangladesh from 9th to 11th January, 2020. The first edition of the festival will start at Vanghmun in Tripura. It aims to unify and strengthen the brotherhood among various Mizo tribes living in different parts of the world.
- The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will observe the year 2020 as the ”year of mobility” that will have a special focus on creation of more residential units and implementation of various welfare measures for the troops. In 2020, the CISF aims to create an infrastructure for their families. CISF, a Central Armed Police Force in India, was set up on 10th March 1969.
