  • The Union Cabinet has approved a National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS). This Scheme aims to provide apprenticeship training to over 50 lakh youngsters in order to create more jobs. It has an outlay of 10,000 crore rupees and a target of training 50 lakh apprentices by 2019-20.
  • The Union cabinet, through a Memorandum of Understanding, has entered into a long term contract with Mozambique for the import of pulses. This will augment domestic availability of pulses and thereby stabilise prices.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its in-principle approval for setting up a Major port at Enayam near Colachel in Tamil Nadu. On completion, the port will become country’s 13th major port. The Enayam Major Port project seeks to make India a trans-shipment hub for the global East-West maritime trade route.
  • The world’s largest Charkha was unveiled at the Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in New Delhi. It was unveiled by the Union Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Kalraj Mishra. The Charkha is made from high quality Burma teak wood and weighs four tonnes.
  • The Union Cabinet has approved the Interest Subvention Scheme for farmers for the year 2016-17. The scheme will help farmers getting short term crop loan payable within one year up to 3 lakhs Rupees at only 4% per annum. Interest subvention for providing short term crop loan to farmers has been provided to Public Sector, Private Sector, Cooperative, Regional, Rural banks, and NABARD.
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval to The High Courts (Alteration of Names) Bill, 2016 to change names of the High Courts based on the nomenclature cities they are located. The Bill facilitates changing of the names of ‘Madras High Court as Chennai High Court’ and ‘Bombay High Court as Mumbai High Court’
  • Para swimmer Niranjan Mukundan has won eight medals at the recently-concluded IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports) U-23 World Games held in Prague, Czech Republic. Of the 8 medal’s Niranjan bagged three gold medals in 50m butterfly, 200m freestyle and 50m breaststroke events. He won two silver medals in 100m fly and 50m freestyle, and three bronze medals in 100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke events.
  • In Prime Minister Modi’s cabinet reshuffle, Prakash Javadekar has been appointed as the Minister for Human Resources and Development, replacing Smriti Irani. Ravi Shankar Prasad has been appointed the Law Minister. Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister Ananth Kumar, has been given the additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs. J. Akbar shares the External Affairs portfolio with General V.K. Singh. Defence has been allotted to Dr. Subhash Bhamre.
  • The Madras High Court has refused to ban a book written by Perumal Murugan. The book, Madhurobhagan, has been mired in controversy for its depiction of certain religious ceremonies. The Court held that the writer’s right to expression cannot be curtailed simply because it does not appeal to certain sections of society.
  • A Supreme Court bench led by Justice Anil R. Dave has recused itself from the AAP government’s petition seeking clarity on centre-state relations in the administration of the capital city. Previously, Justice Khehar had also recused himself.
  • Sixteen military personnel, 14 of them athletes, will be part of the Indian contingent headed to Brazil for the Rio Olympics. These include 12 participants and one coach from the Army with three in shooting, four in marathon, three in walk and one each in rowing and wrestling. From the Navy there are two participants in wrestling and the 400m sprint besides one coach.
  • Juno, NASA’s solar powered spacecraft, has successfully entered Jupiter’s orbit The craft took 5 years to complete this journey, and Juno is now set to study the existence of a solid planetary core, map Jupiter’s magnetic field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in the atmosphere, and observe the planet’s auroras.
