  • India, along with 10 other member countries of World Health Organisation’s (WHO’s) South-East Asian Regional Committee has decided to set up a dedicated fund aimed at building preparedness for health emergencies in the region. The joint funding stream will be established under the South-East Asia Regional Health Emergency Fund (SEARHEF). The Regional Committee is WHO South-East Asia Region’s highest decision-making body. It comprises 11 countries – Bangladesh, South Korea, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand and Timor-Leste.
  • The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has invited separatist Mirwaiz Umar Farooq for a meet on Jammu and Kashmir in New York on the sidelines of the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly later this month. The invite to Kashmiri separatists comes at a time of major civilian uprising in Kashmir.
  • India’s first LIGO (Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory) laboratory will be set up in Aundh in the Hingoli district of Maharashtra. It will be the third such laboratory in the world, and first outside the United States.
  • Researchers from Bangalore’s Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research have achieved a major breakthrough by designing a microscopic heat engine that operates at 50-60 per cent efficiency by relying on changes in bacterial activity.
  • Sikkim has been adjudged the cleanest State while Jharkhand comes last in the list on the condition of sanitation in rural areas of 26 states. The survey was released by the National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO).
  • The Kannur International Airport in Kerala is set to join the elite group of group of airports with 4,000-metre runways.

  • Karolina Pliskova of Czechoslovakia shattered Serena Williams’s bid for a record-breaking 23rd Grand Slam title by defeating her at the US Open semi final. Pliskova will go on to face Angelique Kerber at the final. By qualifying to the final, Kerber became the new World No. 1, and only the second German to achieve this after Steffi Graf. At 28, she is the oldest player to make her debut at No. 1. At the Men’s Final, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka will face each other.
  • China has claimed that it has successfully developed and tested a radar system that uses quantum entanglement to beat the stealth technology of modern military aircrafts. This first Chinese quantum radar was developed by the Intelligent Perception Technology Laboratory. Prior to it, US was only the country stealth-defeating quantum radar.
  • North Korea claims to have successfully conducted its fifth nuclear test. This one is the most powerful test yet, and claims to reach the might of the Hiroshima attack in 1945. News of the test emerged when seismic monitors detected a 5.3-magnitude “artificial earthquake”. North Korea has continued to conduct tests despite several Un sanctions and international condemnation.
  • Scientists have identified a new species of extinct reptiles that existed 212 million years ago in the U.S. They are carnivores measuring 12-18 feet in length, and related to crocodiles. The fossils were found in New Mexico in the USA.
