  • Chinese troops entered 45 km inside Indian territory in a remote area of Arunachal Pradesh earlier this month and built shelters to claim that the territory belonged to them. Initial reports from Anjaw district said more than 40 Chinese soldiers set up a temporary shelter at ‘Plum post’, an area 45 km inside the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the district.
  • The Union government has decided to set up an inter-ministerial committee to study India’s further options on the Indus Waters Treaty. The decision came during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s high-level meeting to review the treaty following the attack on UriNational Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar, Water Resources Secretary Shashi Shekhar, and senior PMO officials were present at the meeting. Among the committee’s tasks would be to look at storage possibilities that would help irrigate fields in Jammu and Kashmir.  At present, India has access to the use of the three “eastern” rivers of the Indus — the Sutlej, Beas and Ravi, while it is allowed limited use of about 20 per cent of the three ‘western’ rivers — the Indus (Sindhu), Chenab and Jhelum.
  • India took its campaign to diplomatically isolate Pakistan to the United Nations, with External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj asking the world community to hold countries that “nurture, peddle and export” terrorism to account.
  • An Indian entrepreneur, Ankit Kawatra, has been selected for the inaugural class of U.N. Young Leaders for Sustainable Development Goals for his initiative of redistributing food left over at weddings and other ceremonies. The young leaders were selected by the U.N. from more than 18,000 nominations from 186 countries. Mr. Kawatra’s NGO Feeding India, claims to have fed 1 million meals with a network of 2,000 volunteers across 28 cities of India.
  • The Maharashtra government is set to receive Rs. 2,000 crore from the Centre in the next three years under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority, and is keen on setting up an ‘eco-battalion’ to increase green cover in the state. The eco-battalion concept was introduced during the rule of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and successfully launched in Assam, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand. Each battalion consists of 108 personnel.
  • India has won the test match against New Zealand by 197-runs in their historic 500th cricket Test in KanpurRavindra Jadeja was declared Man of the Match for his fine all-round performance. He had taken six wickets and scored 92 runs in the match. India is the 4th country to play 500 Tests in a format which has 10 participants. Others are England (played 976 test matches), Australia (791) and West Indies (517).

  • Indian paddler Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has won the Belgium Open title of table tennis in the men’s singles category. This was his first pro title. With this victory, he becomes only the second Indian table tennis player to win an ITTF event. Achanta Sharath Kamal was the first Indian table tennis player to win an ITTF event in 2012.
  • Riya Bhatia won the $10,000 ITF women’s tournament, beating Romanian Ana Mihaila in the final.
  • Australia has qualified for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 after defeating Sri Lanka in the ICC Women’s Championship.
  • The Chennai Open Golf Championship is set to be held in October at the Madras Gymkhana Annexe. The tournament returns to the city after seven years.
  • Archana Kamath, Manav Thakkar and Ananth Devarajan will represent India at this year’s ITTF World junior table tennis championships, to be held in Cape Town.
  • Sania Mirza continued at No.1 in the latest WTA women’s doubles ranking, following her recent victory in the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo with Barbora Strycova. Rohan Bopanna stays at No. 18 in the doubles ranking while Leander Paes moved four places up to 60.
  • Arnold Palmer, a renowned golf player, has passed away at the age of 87. Palmer, who was called “The King”, captured seven Majors during his illustrious career — The Masters (1958, 1960, 1962 and 1964), the British Open (1961 and 1962) and the US Open (1960).
  • Human Rights Watch (HRW) has accused Pakistan’s police of routinely carrying out extra-judicial killings, torture and arbitrary arrests, and called on Islamabad to implement urgent reforms of its under-resourced forces. The findings were contained in a new report based on interviews with more than 30 police officers and 50 victims or witnesses of abuse across three of the country’s four Provinces.
  • Google plans to release a new laptop, known by an informal nickname “Pixel 3”, which will be the first ever device to run on the software giant’s new Android-Chrome OS, called Andromeda.
  • World Tourism Day is observed annually on 27th September to raise awareness about the importance of tourism.
