  • The Union Cabinet has approved the long-awaited amendments to the HIV Bill, granting stronger protection to the country’s HIV community. The Bill prohibits discrimination against people living with HIV (PLHIV) in accessing healthcare, acquiring jobs, renting houses or in education institutions in the public and private sectors.
  • The International Court of Justice rejected nuclear disarmament cases filed by the Pacific nation of the Marshall Islands against Britain, India and Pakistan, saying it did not have jurisdiction. The Court ruled that the Marshall Islands had failed to prove that a legal dispute over disarmament existed between it and the three nuclear powers before the case was filed in 2014, and that “consequently the court lacks jurisdiction.”
  • The NBT — an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Human Resource Development — is launching,a new scheme titled the ‘Mahila Lekhak Protsahan Yojana’ (scheme to promote women writers), under which it will publish the first work of women authors in English or any of the 22 Indian languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution. The prospective authors should be below the age of 40.
  • India’s latest communication satellite GSAT-18 was successfully launched from the spaceport of Kourou in French Guiana. The satellite was launched on board of heavy duty Ariane-5 VA-231 rocket of Arianespace. It was successfully injected into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO).
  • The Union Government has appointed senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Sushil Chandra as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). 
  • The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and the European Union in the field of water resources. The MoU envisages strengthening technological, scientific and management capabilities of India and EU in field of water management on the basis of reciprocity, equality and mutual benefit.
  • The Union Cabinet gave its approval to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and African Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) for capacity building programmes in the field of rural development. 
  • Former ISRO Chairman and space scientist Prof Udupi Ramachandra Rao became the first Indian to be inducted in the Hall of Fame of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF). He had served as Chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from 1984 to 1994, and has been awarded the Padma Bhushan.  
  • The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given approval for the ONGC Videsh Limited (OVL) proposal to buy 11% stake in JSC Vankorneft. OVL will buy this stake in JSC Vankorneft from Rosneft Oil Company (Rosneft), National Oil Company of Russia which operates the Vankor oil fields.
  • World No. 3 Siddharth Parikh clinched the gold medal at the inaugural Asian billiards 2016, defeating Aung Htay of Myanmar.

  • The former Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Guterres, is poised to be the ninth United Nations Secretary-General and is expected to be recommended to the General Assembly for election on Thursday.
  • The 2016 Nobel Prize for Chemistry has been awarded for the development of the world’s smallest machines. Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Sir Fraser Stoddart and Bernard Feringa will share the 8m kronor (£727,000) prize for the design and synthesis of machines on a molecular scale.
