- Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka was sworn-in as the 31st Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court. Karnataka Governor Vajubhai R Vala administered his oath of office in Bengaluru. He will succeed Justice Dinesh Maheshwari who was elevated to the Supreme Court in January 2019. Justice L Narayana Swamy was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court during the mean time.
- The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres appointed 17 global figures which includes China’s Alibaba chief Jack Ma and Indian actress Dia Mirza as the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) advocates. Jack Ma, the founder and Executive Chairman of Chinese MNC Alibaba Group has been an SDG Advocate since 2016. Dia Mirza is United Nation Environment Program (UNEP) Goodwill Ambassador for India.
- United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released a report titled “Sand and sustainability: Finding new solutions for environmental governance of global sand resources” on sand mining and its consumption. As per it, global demand for sand and gravel is at 40 to 50 billion tonnes per year. China and India head the list of critical hotspots for sand extraction impacts in rivers, lakes and on coastlines, most likely because these countries also lead globally on infrastructure and construction.
- Ireland on May 9, 2019 became the second nation in the world after Britain to declare a climate emergency. The British Parliament became the world’s first to declare a climate emergency by passing the largely symbolic motion on May 1, 2019. The declaration of the emergency is a call for governments across the world to change their behaviour towards the climate and biodiversity in profound ways, on a sustained basis.
- Indian Navy Ships (INS) Kolkata and Shakti carried out Group Sail with naval ships of Japan, Philippines and the United States of America in the South China Sea from May 03 to May 09, 2019. During the ships’ stay in Busan, the IN Ships took part in the Opening Ceremony of Maritime Security Field Training Exercise under the aegis of ADMM-PLUS.
- Chhattisgarh Police have deployed anti Naxal women commandos for the first time in the country in District Reserve Guard (DRG) which is frontline of anti-Naxal force. The specially-raised squad, is known as ‘Danteshwari Ladake’. The DRG was first set up in Kanker and Narayanpur districts of the state in 2008.
- Observed every year on May 11, National Technology Day acts as a reminder of India’s technological advancements. On this day in 1998, India successfully tested Shakti-I nuclear missile at the Indian Army’s Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. Following the tests, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced India as a nuclear state, making it sixth country in the world that has joined the nations “nuclear club” and the first country that was not party to the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (NPT).
