  1. Indian men’s football team captain Sunil Chhetri was named as Men’s Footballer of the Year, while Ashalata Devi won the Women’s Footballer of the Year title at the All India Football Federation (AIFF) 2018-19 awards. Chhetri won the AIFF award for the third consecutive year and for a record-extending sixth time (2007, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2017). Since 1992, the AIFF Player of Year has been awarded by the All India Football Federation. Since its inception in 1937, AIFF has been the governing body of the football association in India.

  2. State Bank of India Managing Director (MD) Anshula Kant has been appointed as the MD and Chief Financial Officer of the World Bank. Ms Kant will be responsible for the financial and risk management of the organisation. Her work will include oversight of financial reporting, risk management, and working closely with the World Bank CEO on the mobilization of the International Development Association (IDA) and other financial resources. The 58-year-old joined SBI in 1983 as a probationary officer.
  3. The 2019 global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) from the UN Development Programme (UNDP) said that the number of poor people in India fell by more than 271 million between the period of 2006 and 2016. It shows that, in the 101 countries assessed – 31 low income, 68 middle income and 2 high income –about 1.3 billion people are “multi-dimensionally poor”. Bihar was still the poorest state in 2015- 16, with more than half of its population living in poverty.
  4. Meghalaya became the first state in India to ensure the conservation of water and have its own water policy following a nod given by the State Cabinet on 12th July, 2019. The objective of the policy is to recognize water resources as a common pool resource, to provide safe and hygienic water for drinking, domestic use and sanitation and livelihood development to all residents of the state.
  5. Union Agriculture Ministry under the National Agriculture Development Scheme has set up RAFTAAR, an Agri-Business Incubation Centre at the Indira Gandhi Agriculture University of Raipur. The objective of the scheme is to make farming a remunerative economic activity by strengthening farmer’s efforts, risk mitigation and promoting agri-business entrepreneurship.
  6. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Director General of Russia’s space agency (ROSCOSMOS) Dmitry Rogozin held high-level talks in New Delhi to elevate bilateral co-operation to the next level in the field of space, including assistance in India’s maiden human space flight mission ‘Gaganyaan’.
  7. Vikas Swarup, a 1986-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, has been appointed as the Secretary (Consular, Passport, Visa and Overseas Indian Affairs) in the External Affairs Ministry. His appointment will come into effect from August 1st, 2019. Swarup is at present India’s High Commissioner to Canada.
