- The International Day of Family Remittances (IDFR) is observed every year all across the world on 16 June to recognize the contributions made by more than 200 million migrants towards improving the lives of their 800 million family members back home, and also to create a future of hope for their children. IDFR is a universally-recognized observance adopted by United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) resolution A/RES/72/281 on 12 June 2018.
- Denmark’s Inger Andersen has been appointed as the new Executive Director (ED) of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for a term of four years. Inger is a Danish economist and environmentalist with over 30 years of experience in international development economics, environmental sustainability. She will succeed Joyce Msuya of Tanzania, who served as acting head of UNEP since late 2018. UNEP was established on 5 June 1972 with headquarters at Nairobi, Kenya.
- Starting from 16 May 2019, the armies of India and Myanmar carried out a 3-week-long coordinated operation in their respective border areas called ‘Operation Sunrise 2’ to bust terror camps. The operation was targeted at militant groups operating in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. The ‘Operation Sunrise 1’ was conducted 3 months ago (February 2019) along the Indo-Myanmar border. Four Northeast states of India share a 1,640-km long border with Myanmar namely, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Nagaland and Manipur.
- The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (WDCDD) is being observed globally on 17 June 2019 to promote public awareness about presence of desertification and drought, highlighting methods of preventing desertification and also about international efforts to combat desertification. This year theme was Let’s Grow the Future Together. WDCDD was proclaimed on 30 January 1995 by United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) resolution A/RES/49/115.
- For the first time India will be hosting the 14th session of Conference of Parties (COP-14) of United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in September 2019, to address the issue of land degradation and desertification. India will be taking over the COP presidency from China for the next two years until the next COP is hosted in 2021. UNCCD was established in 1994.
- J P Nadda has been appointed as BJP’s working president during the party’s parliamentary board meeting on June 17, 2019. Parliamentary board is highest decision-making body of the BJP. This is for the first time that the BJP has appointed a working president however Amit Shah will remain BJP chief. J P Nadda was in-charge of UP for 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In 2014 PM Modi appointed him as Health Minister.
- Food Processing Industries Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal announced that World Food India will be held in New Delhi from 1st to 4th of November 2019 to position India as Food Processing Destination of the World. Indian Food Processing Industry has grown tremendously recording 11 per cent growth rate, which is twice the pace of Global Industry.
