- Directorate General of Foreign Trade said that the import policy of Agarbatti and other odoriferous preparations has been revised from free to restricted. Now, importers of these goods require a licence from the government.
- Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel on 31st August inaugurated the gallery of confiscated and retrieved antiquities at the Purana Quila in New Delhi. The retrieved items will enhance the knowledge about our rich culture and heritage. The number of antiquities recovered in the last five years is the highest ever. The gallery was established by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
- Asian Games medallist Abhishek Verma won the gold while Saurabh Chaudhary claimed the bronze as Indian shooters dominated the podium in the men’s 10-metre air pistol event of the ongoing ISSF World Cup in Rio De Janeiro. India is now placed at the top of the medals’ tally with two gold, one silver and a bronze medal.
- Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced four mergers of PSU (Public Sector Undertakings) Banks – Punjab National Bank + Oriental Bank of Commerce + United Bank of India, Canara Bank + Syndicate Bank, Union Bank + Andhra Bank + Corporation Bank and Indian Bank + Allahabad Bank. With this, India will now have 12 public sector banks.
- Nripendra Misra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, resigned from his post at a time when India’s GDP growth slowed down to more than a five-year low of 5% in the June quarter of 2019-20 against 5.8% in the March quarter. Misra was the former Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) from 2006 to 2009. Former cabinet secretary Pradeep Kumar Sinha, a 1977 batch Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer, who superannuated on Friday has been appointed as the officer on special duty (OSD) in the Prime Minister’s Office.
- PM Narendra Modi presented the National Yoga Awards 2019 in recognition of contribution for promotion and development of Yoga. He has also launched 10 AYUSH Health and Wellness Centres in Haryana. The winners of the Yoga Awards 2019 in the national category are Bihar School of Yoga, Munger (Organisation Category) and Swami Rajarshi Muni of Life Mission (Individual Category). The PM’s award for outstanding contribution for Promotion and Development of Yoga had been institutionalized and announced on 21stJune, 2016.
- Aparna Kumar, a 2002 batch IPS officer from the Uttar Pradesh Cadre, became the first IPS officer to be honoured with the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2018. She won the award in the ‘land adventure’ category. She is currently posted as the DIG in the Indo Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBP) at Dehradun.
- Former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari has been appointed as the new Governor of Maharashtra while former Union Minister Arif Mohammed Khan will take the responsibility as Kerala’s Governor. Former Union Minister Bandaru Dattatraya will be the new Governor of Himachal Pradesh in place of Kalraj Mishra, who has been given the charge of Governor of Rajasthan. Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan is the new Governor of Telangana.
