  1. Secretary of the Department of Commerce in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and GeM Chairman Aup Wadhawan launched GeM Samvaad, a national outreach programme to bring on-board more local sellers. The programme will take place from 19th December, 2019 to 17th February, 2020 and will cover all the states and union territories of the country. GeM is a short form of one stop Government e-Market Place where common user goods and services can be procured.
  2. The Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry has announced the setting up of the first ever Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Tripura on 16th December, 2019. It will be a Sector Specific Economic Zone for Agro-Based Food Processing at an estimated investment of around Rs. 1550 Crore. The SEZ, to be developed by the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation, will focus on rubber based industries and agri-food processing industries.

  3. Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry has been named as the winner of the Rachael Heyhoe-Flint Award for ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year for the second time. She has also been named as the ICC Women’s ODI Player of Year. Alyssa Healy (Australia) has been named as the Women’s T20 Cricketer of the Year. Chanida Sutthiruang of Thailand won the ICC Women’s Emerging Player of the Year. Indian opener Smriti Mandhana was named in both ODI and T20 teams of this year. Australian Meg Lanning was chosen as the captain of both ODI and T20 team.
  4. The Government of India has launched the National Broadband Mission (NBM) with an aim to provide an internet connection to all villages by 2022. The vision of the NBM is to fast track growth of digital communications infrastructure, bridge the digital divide, facilitate digital empowerment and inclusion and provide affordable and universal access of broadband for all. Union Minister for Communications Ravi Shankar Prasad launched the mission, which is a part of the National Digital Communications Policy, 2018.
  5. The U.S. House of Representatives impeached President Donald Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Donald Trump, the 45th President of America, has become the third President in the country to be impeached. Earlier, the impeachment process was held against Andrew Johnson in 1868 and Bill Clinton in 1998, but both the leaders managed to save their seats. The Senate, where the Chief Justice of the United States of America will preside over the trial, decides whether the president should be convicted on the charges and removed from office.
  6. Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officer B P Raju was awarded the ‘India Cyber Cop of the Year 2019’by the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) – Data Security Council of India (DSCI) during the Annual Information Security Summit held at Gurgaon, Haryana, for investigating and cracking a fraud case in an online entrance exam conducted by an engineering college in Rajasthan.
  7. The first ever Global Refugee Forum was held in Geneva, Switzerland from 17th December to 18th December, 2019 to give impetus to efforts to achieve the compact’s objectives and translate international solidarity into concrete action. It was jointly hosted by the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR), along with the Government of Switzerland.
