- Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the agreement between India and Brazil on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters. The proposed Agreement will provide a broad legal framework for bilateral cooperation with the Federative Republic of Brazil in investigation and prosecution of crime as well as in tracing, restraint and confiscation of proceeds and instruments of crime as well as the fund meant to finance terrorist acts.
- President Ram Nath Kovind presented the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, 2020 to 49 children at Rashtrapati Bhavan on 22nd January, 2020. The Bal Puraskar is given by the government to children every year to recognize exceptional achievements in the fields of innovation, scholastic achievements, social service, arts and culture, sports and bravery and carries a medal, a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a certificate and a citation. Twenty-two children who were selected for National Bravery Awards also received the awards from the President.
- The 50th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland on 21st January, 2020. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal led the Indian delegation at the event. This year’s programme focuses on achieving maximum impact on the Forum’s platform for public-private cooperation across six core areas of activity: ecology, economy, society, industry, technology, and geopolitics. Bollywood actress Deepika Padukone has been awarded Crystal Award at Davos for her leadership in raising mental health awareness. The Founderand Executive Chairman of WEF is Professor Klaus Schwab. WEF was established in 1971.
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the first PRAGATI meeting of the year 2020 and 32nd PRAGATI interaction, on 22nd January, 2020. PRAGATI is the ICT based multi-modal platform for Pro-Active Governance and Timely Implementation, involving Central and State governments. In the meeting, PM discussed about nine delayed projects worth over Rs. 24,000 crores and spread over nine states. PRAGATI, an interactive platform to address grievances of common people, was launched by PM Modi in March 2015.
- World Economic Forum on 20th January, 2020 released the Social Mobility Index which measures social mobility of the population worldwide. Denmark was ranked first in the list of 82 countries. India got 76th rank in the list. India is ranked 41st in terms of lifelong education and 53rd in terms of working conditions. India ranks 76th in social security and 79th in fair pay distribution.
- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli jointly inaugurated the second Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Jogbani – Biratnagar on 21st January, 2020. It was built with Indian assistance to facilitate trade and people’s movement across India-Nepal border. The first ICP was built at the Raxaul-Birgunj border in 2018.
- Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura celebrated their 48th statehood day on 21st January, 2020. All the three states became full-fledged states under the North Eastern Region (Reorganisation) Act, 1971on 21st January, 1972. Manipur and Tripura were granted the status Union Territories in 1949. Meghalaya was made an autonomous state within Assam via the Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act of 1969 as per the sixth schedule of the constitution.
