- In relation to the INX Media corruption case, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested the former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram, who was sent to the CBI custody till 26th August by a special court in Delhi. The INX Media corruption case relates to the irregularities in the FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) to the INX Media group for getting overseas funds worth around Rs 305 crore in 2007.
- Government of India has allowed access to 137 mountain peaks located in the States of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Sikkim to foreigners desirous of obtaining Mountaineering Visa (‘MX’) for mountaineering and trekking. Until now, the foreigners had to seek the permission from the Defence Ministry and Home Ministry to climb these peaks.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired the 24th meeting of the Western Zonal Council at Panaji in Goa on 22nd August, 2019. It is a forum for the Centre and states to exchange ideas on issues related to health, security and social welfare. Western Zonal Councilis a zonal council comprising the states of Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra and the Union Territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli. The States have been grouped into six zones, having an Advisory Council to foster cooperation among these States.
- The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Secretary in Ministry of Home Affairs Rajiv Gauba as India’s new Cabinet Secretary for two years. Cabinet Secretary is the most powerful position in the country’s civil service. He will succeed the 1977 batch Uttar Pradesh-cadre IAS officer Pradeep Kumar Sinha.
- Dwayne Johnson topped the world’s highest-paid actors list released by Forbes. The only Bollywood actor in the list, Akshay Kumar was ranked fourth with an earning of USD 65 million (about Rs 450 crore).
- The Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi appointed Secretary of Department of Defence Production Ajay Kumar as the Secretary, Union Ministry of Defence. He will succeed Sanjay Mitra, a 1982 batch West Bengal-cadre IAS officer. Subash Chandra, a 1986 batch IAS officer will replace Ajay Kumar as the new Defence Production Secretary of India.
- International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief was observed for the first time on 22nd August, 2019 to honour victims and survivors of heinous acts who often remain forgotten. This day comes right after the International Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism which is observed on 21st The United Nation General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution A/RES/73/296 on 28th May, 2019 designating 22nd August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief.
- SARAL (State Rooftop Solar Attractiveness Index) was launched by the Union Minister of State for Power and New & Renewable Energy (IC) RK Singh during the Review Planning and Monitoring (RPM) Meeting with States and State Power Utilities held in New Delhi. SARAL evaluates Indian states based on their attractiveness for rooftop development. Karnataka has been placed at the top in the index, followed by Telangana.
