  • The Global Wage Report 2016-17 was released by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). It was found that India is one among those countries that suffer from the worst levels of gender wage disparity i.e. men earning more than women in similar jobs. The wage gap exceeds 30%.
  • The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has banned open burning of waste across the country and has announced that it will impose a fine of Rs. 25,000 on each incident.
  • Coal Mitra, a web portal for allowing flexibility in utilizing domestic coal was launched by the Union Ministry of Coal.

  • Ravichandran Ashwin was conferred the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy after being adjudged the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year. He is the second Indian to bag the two prestigious awards in the same year after Rahul Dravid.
  • Jeje Lalpekhlua has been nominated as the 2016 AIFF Player of the Year while Sasmita Malik was chosen as the 2016 AIFF Woman Footballer of the Year.
  • Lt. Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung submitted his resignation to the Union Government.
  • GARV-II mobile app was launched by the Union Minister of Power Piyush Goyal. It aims to provide village-wise and habitation-wise base line data on household electrification for all the states. The Ministry also launched SAMVAD, a Citizen Engagement Window for the purpose of enhancing participation of public at large.
  • A Memorandum for General Consultancy was signed by Indian Railways, National High Speed Rail Corporation and Japan International Cooperation Agency. As per this agreement, JICA will ensure smooth implementation of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Railway Project.
  • India defeated South Korea to secure the bronze medal at the 4th Women’s U-18 Asia Cup 2016 hockey tournament in Bangkok.
  • Shive Keshavan won the gold medal at the Asian Luge Championship held in Nagano, Japan.
  • Epsilon-2, a solid fuel rocket has been successfully launched by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. It will study radiation belts around the earth in the Van Allen radiation belts, where the earth’s magnetic field has trapped huge number of fast-moving electrons as well as other particles. soon after the lift-off.
