- Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch ‘Fit India Movement’ on August 29, 2019, with an aim to encourage people to instil physical activity and sports in their everyday routine. For this initiative, a 28-member committee headed by Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju was formed to advise the government. The members of the committee are secretaries of Sports, Secondary Education, Ayush, Youth Affairs, among others. The other members of the committee are Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President and seven NSF heads of boxing, athletics, football and cycling.
- India’s ‘Statue of Unity’ and ‘Soho House’ in Mumbai have been featured in the Time’s list of 100 greatest places in the world. The 597-ft tall ‘Statue of Unity’ is located in Gujarat and the Soho House is located in Mumbai. The Time magazine in its annual list compiles a list of 100 greatest places in the world that are new and noteworthy destinations to experience.
- The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) suspended the accreditation of India’s National Dope Testing Laboratory (NDTL) for 6 months due to its non-conformities with the International Standard for Laboratories (ISL). With this, NDTL could not carry out any anti-doping activities.
- Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Irani conferred the POSHAN Abhiyaan Awards for 2018-19 in New Delhi on 23rd August, 2019. Nine states and three Union Territories were awarded during the ceremony. Smriti Irani also launched #ThankyouAnganwadiDidi – a short film on the occasion, which recognises the contribution of the Anganwadi workers towards the development of a healthy child.
- Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel launched the book ‘The Diary of Manu Gandhi’ (1943-44), edited and translated by Tridip Suhrud, at the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in New Delhi. The National Archives of India, in collaboration with Oxford University Press, brought out the book. Manu Gandhi (Mridula) was the grand niece of Mahatma Gandhi and stayed with him till his assassination. The National Archives of India was established as ‘Imperial Record Department’ on 11 March 1891 at Kolkata.
- Indian Army and Tata Realty & Housing signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide quality housing to army personnel. Army Welfare Housing Organization (AWHO) will now facilitate acquisition of homes from reputed private builders at discounted rates rather than building them for soldiers. The AWHO is a society formed in December 1978.
- Iran unveiled its new home-grown air defence system called Bavar-373 during a ceremony held on Iran’s ‘National Defence Industry Day’. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani has ordered to add Bavar-373 to the country’s missile defence network. It is Iran’s first domestically produced long-range missile defence system.
- Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the Bharatcraft portal, an e-commerce marketing platform, will be launched by the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). It will provide platform for the MSMEs to market and sell their products and in turn, boost the overall sector. It has the potential to achieve revenues of around Rs. 10 lakh crore in 2-3 years.
