  1. High Commissions of Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Fiji organised a cultural event called ‘Namaste Pacific’ in India to showcase the culture of these pacific countries. The International Solar Alliance and Pollinate Energy based in India, Nepal, and Australia and solar lanterns from the Barefoot College in Rajasthan were also showcased at the event.
  2. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has constituted a five-member special cell for the redressal of grievances and mitigating tax-related issues in case of start-up entities with respect to the administration of Income-tax Act, 1961. Start-up entities can approach the cell for speedy resolution of their grievances.
  3. The first ‘Garbage Café’ in India will be opened in Ambikapur city, Chhattisgarh to make Ambikapur city plastic-free. It is an initiative of the Ambikapur Municipal Corporation. In this café, poor people and rag pickers will get free food in exchange for one kilogram of plastic. The garbage collected will be sold at the Solid Liquid Resources Management Centre. Ambikapur City has been ranked as the second cleanest city in the country in the Swachhata rankings after Indore.
  4. In the 67th Nehru Trophy Boat Race held at the Punnamada Lake in Alappuzha in Kerala, ‘Nadubhagam Chundan’, the snake boat of Pallathuruthy Boat Club, won the title. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race was instituted to commemorate the visit of the country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to the area and his boat ride in Alappuzha Lake in 1952.

  5. As per the direction of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), the University Grants Commission (UGC) has set up a five-member committee headed by Chairman DP Singh and assisted by UGC Joint Secretary (Private Universities) Surender Singh to look into the allegations of the sale of fake degrees by certain universities. The committee has been given three weeks to identify institutions and individuals who have resorted to such illegal practices, so that strict action can be taken against all the people involved.
  6. The Election Commission’s new mega Electors Verification Programme which seeks to update electoral rolls through crowd sourcing will be launched across the country on 1st September, 2019. The programme will go on till 15thUnder the programme, a voter from each family will get a username and password, allowing a person to upload all documents related to electoral registration and tag similar details about his or her family members. These details will then be verified by block-level officers.
  7. Bihar government has banned the manufacture, storage, distribution, transportation and sale of pan masala containing magnesium carbonate which could cause heart diseases. The food and safety department of the State Government had found that pan masala contains magnesium carbonate after examining various samples.
