  1. Researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT-KGP) developed a new technology called Hydro Thermal Carbonization (HTC) for solid waste management. Municipal solid waste can be converted to biofuel, soil amendment and absorbents using this HTC technology. By using existing processes, only 20-30% of  the organic fraction of municipal solid waste is being recycled to biofuel.
  2. The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the signing of the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements (UNISA), resulting from the Mediation by the Republic of India scheduled to be held at Singapore on 7th August, 2019, or at the United Nations Headquarters. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the UNISA Resulting from Mediation on 20th December 2018. It is also known as the Singapore Convention on Mediation.
  3. Girraj Prasad Gupta, a 1983-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) Officer, took over as the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), Department of Expenditure, Union Ministry of Finance. CGA is the Principal Accounting Adviser to the Government of India. The CGA office prepares Annual Appropriation Accounts (Civil) and Union Finance Accounts, which are submitted to the Parliament, under Article 150 of the Constitution.

  4. Indian journalist Ravish Kumar is among the five people who have been chosen for the Ramon Magsaysay Award 2019, which is Asia’s premier prize and highest honour. Kumar, an NDTV journalist, has been chosen in recognition for ‘harnessing journalism to give voice to voiceless’. The award was established in 1957.
  5. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on 1st August allowed Bank of China to offer regular banking services in the country i.e. it has been included in the Second Schedule to the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934. All commercial banks, like State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, Punjab National Bank and ICICI Bank, are in the Second Schedule. Further, the name of ‘The Royal Bank of Scotland plc’ has been changed to ‘NatWest Markets Plc’ in the Second Schedule.
  6. e-cars have been launched by the Indian Army for use by its officials in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Ltd (EESL) in a joint venture of the Central PSU’s under the Ministry of Power in New Delhi on 1st The Indian Army plans to operate10 e-cars in the first slot as a pilot project and develop further such e-cars in Delhi to ensure minimal emissions.
  7. Netherlands on 1st August banned wearing of face-covering clothing including burqa and niqab worn by conservative Muslim women in any public place including public transport, government buildings and at health and education institutions. However, it doesn’t apply to public streets. The law also bans motor helmets and ski masks.
