- Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 107th Indian Science Congress (ISC) under the theme ‘Science and Technology for Rural Development’ on 3rd January, 2020 in Bengaluru. This summit aims to bridge the gap between farmer and tech-developers. The event is being hosted by Department of Science and Technology from 3rd-7th January, 2020. The first meeting of the Indian Science Congress was held from 15th–17th January, 1914 in Culcutta (Kolkata). Farmers Science Congress, Women Science Congress and Children Science Congress also will be held on the sidelines of Indian Science Congress.
- World Health Organization (WHO) designated the year 2020 as the ‘Year of the Nurse and the Midwife’ to honour the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. WHO is the collaborating partner in the three-year ‘Nursing Now!’ Campaign (2018-2020). This campaign aims to improve health globally by raising the status and profile of nursing. WHO is leading the development of first-of-its kind “World Nursing Report” that is to be launched in 2020. Also, the International Nurse Day is celebrated every year on 12th May in honor of Florence Nightingale.
- The Government Think Tank NITI Aayog on 1st January, 2020 released its draft guideline document ‘Model Concession Agreement for Setting Up Medical Colleges under Public Private Partnership’. It suggests the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model to link new or existing private medical colleges with functional district hospital to address shortage of qualifies doctors and bridge gap in medical education.
- India celebrated the 353rd birth anniversary of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh on 2nd January, 2020. Born at Patna Sahib in 1666, Guru Gobind Singh succeeded his father Guru Tegh Bahadur as the leader of Sikhs at the age of nine. He was a spiritual leader, philosopher, poet and master warrior. He founded Sikh Warrior community called Khalsa in 1699. Guru Nanak founded Sikhism in 1469 and was the first Sikh Guru.
- India and Pakistan exchanged the lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen lodged in jails through diplomatic channels on 1st January, 2020. India handed over the lists of 267 Pakistan civilian prisoners and 99 fishermen to Pakistan, who are in India’s custody. Pakistan shared the lists of 55 civilian prisoners and 227 fishermen in its custody, who are Indians or believed-to-be Indians. The lists are exchanged between the two countries on 1st January and 1st July every year as per the 2008 Agreement.
- The Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das launched ‘MANI’ mobile app to help the visually challenged identify the denomination of currency notes that were launched after demonetization. MANI stands for Mobile Aided Note Identifier. It scans currency notes using mobile camera and gives audio output in both Hindi and English. The app will not authenticate a note as genuine or fake.
- Election Commission of India on 1st January, 2020 launched a new online system- Political Parties Registration Tracking Management System (PPRTMS) – that will allow political parties to track their registration applications submitted to the poll panel on a real-time basis. The users will get status updates through SMS and e-mail. The registration of political parties is governed under the provisions of section 29A of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
