Hand-in-Hand exercise commences

  1. The Government has approved the setting up of seven Frequency Modulation (FM) transmitters at premises of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) to strengthen the FM coverage along the Indo-Nepal border. The projects would be in three states namely Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Set up in 1963, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) is one of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in India and is currently under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
  2. President of India Ram Nath Kovind conferred the National Florence Nightingale Awards to 36 awardees in New Delhi on 5th December, 2019 on the occasion of the International Nurses Day. The World Health Organisation (WHO) also declared the year 2020 as the ‘Year of Nurses and Midwives’. The Florence Nightingale Awards were constituted in 1973 by the Union Government to recognize the meritorious services rendered by the nurses to the society as a whole.
  3. Minister for Petroleum & Natural Gas and Minister of Steel Dharmendra Pradhan chaired the first meeting of the Consultative Committee of the Members of Parliament (MPs) of the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas on 5th December 2019. The committee informed that the government is working towards a transformative change in energy sector by ushering in gas-based economy by increasing the share of gas in India’s primary energy mix from current 6.2% to 15% by 2030.
  4. Indian Railways with AC coaches generally run on the End-on-Generation (EOG) system, which adds to both air and noise pollution. Hence, the Indian Railways has adopted the Head on Generation (HOG) technology to curb air and noise pollution. The HOG works with an improvised converter, which is fitted in electric locomotives, which can replace the diesel generators.

  5. The 8th edition of the ‘Hand-in-Hand-2019’, a joint India and China training exercise is going to be conducted from 7th December to 20th December, 2019 at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya, with the theme of counter-terrorism. The exercise aims to enrich both the contingents from each other’s experience in counter-terrorism operations. The first Hand-in-Hand exercise was held in 2007.
  6. International Civil Aviation Day is celebrated on 7th December every year to raise awareness about the importance of the role played by the organisation of the International Civil Aviation in air transport. The day has been celebrated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) since 7th December, 1994 on the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Civil Aviation. In 1996, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 7th December as the International Civil Aviation Day.
  7. The Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Centre for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies (cGanga) led by IIT Kanpur organised the 4th India Water Impact Summit under the theme ‘Financing of High Impact projects in the water sector’ from 5th December to 7th December, 2019 in New Delhi. It was inaugurated by the Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. The summit focused on integrated water resources management in urban and rural settings in order to achieve the Government’s goal of providing water to every household in the next 5 years. The first India Water Impact Summit was held in 2012.
