  1. A more advanced new species of reddish-brown pit viper were discovered by a team of herpetologists (name given to those who specialize in the study of reptiles and amphibians) in Arunachal Pradesh and this discovery was published in the Russian Journal of Herpetology. Trimeresurus arunachalensis is the scientific name of the viper and this discovery makes Arunachal Pradesh the only State in India to have a pit viper named after it.

The ‘Global Health Security Strategy’ was unveiled by the US government and is seen as an effort that outlines coordinated US approach to help improve the world’s ability in stopping deadly outbreaks of diseases, before they spread between countries. It seeks to detect, prevent and respond to threats from various infectious diseases occurring naturally or accidentally.
  3. On 11th May, the World Migratory Bird Day (WMBD) 2019 is being observed where people across the world take action and organize pubtlic events like bird festivals, exhibitions, education programmes and bird-watching excursions to celebrate WMBD, which also will be later celebrated this year on 12th October. The theme for this year is “Protect Birds: Be the Solution to Plastic Pollution!”
  4. India and China signed a protocol for exporting of Indian Chilli Meal from India to China. This was the 4th protocol signed between the two countries from 2018 that allows export of farm commodities from India to China.
  5. According to Indian Staffing Federation’s Tech Employment Projections, the tech industry of India will add another three million new jobs in the next 5 years. The size of the tech army of the country is set to reach 7 million by 2023 with the new technical jobs set to come up in digital technology areas such as Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Internet of Things, Analytics, Big Data, Blockchain and Augmented Reality.
  6. The target set under ‘REPLACE Strategy’ – of eliminating trans-fat from industrially produced global food supply by 2023 – is to be achieved by the World Health Organization after it partnered with the International Food and Beverage Alliance. According to WHO, the trans-fat is responsible for more than 5,00,000 death each year as a result of coronary heart diseases.
  7.  Igor Stimac, former Croatia international player, was appointed as the coach of the Indian men’s football team. The All India Football Federation, headed by Shyam Thapa, recommended the name of Stimac who was a part of the “golden generation” of Croatia when it finished third at the 1998 FIFA World Cup.
  8. The world’s highest resolution image sensor with 64 megapixels has been unveiled by Samsung Electronics Co. This is a step taken to meet the rising demands for smartphones to have better image quality.
  9. Publication of fake news in Singapore was criminalized by the passage of a law – The Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill – and permits the government to block and order removal of such content. Its mandate requires service providers to immediately remove the content and the penalty for offenders is up to 10 years of jail term and heavy fines.
