  1. The 2019 International Association of Athletes Federations (IAAF) World Relays concluded after a two-day biennial event, held from 11th May to 12th May in Yokohama, Japan. The event acts as a platform for athletes to qualify for the upcoming 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championship to be held in Doha, Qatar in September/October 2019. Two new mixed events – 2x2x400 metres relay and shuttle hurdles relay – were added.
  2. Indian-origin Hinduja brothers were named as the wealthiest people in the United Kingdom for a 3rd time in a row in the Sunday Times Rich List 2019. Their fortune is worth 22 billion pounds and they hold global interests in various areas such as banking, oil and gas, IT and property. Another noteworthy mention in the list is Valerie Moran who became the first black female entrepreneur ever to be ranked in the Times Rich List
  3. The Islamic State has recently claimed for the first time that it has established a province in India. It is claimed to be called “Wilayah of Hind” and Indian security experts do not think that these claims hold any water but also maintain that they should not be written off.

  4. The Indian Air Force was handed over its first AH-64E (I) – Apache Guardian helicopter at the Boeing production facility in Mesa, Arizona, USA. The first batch of around 4 to 6 Apache helicopters will be delivered to India in July 2019. India and US had signed a deal worth $3 billion for inducting 22 Apaches Helicopters in the Indian Air Force by March 2020.
  5. India and Nepal have inked a deal on procurement of demo train that operates on diesel i.e. supply of two 1600 HP Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) train sets. The trains will be manufactured by Integrated Coach Factory in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. These trains will operationalise the 34 km long railway corridor stretch that links Jayanagar in Bihar and Kurtha in Nepal.
  6. India will be hosting a World Trade Organization (WTO) Ministerial meeting of developing countries in New Delhi on 13th to 14th May 2019. The aim is to discuss various challenges being faced by multilateral rules-based trading system.
  7. The world’s first exclusive women’s cricket magazine named ‘Criczone’ was released in India. The cover story of the first edition features Indian Women’s Cricket team Vice-Captain Smriti Mandhana.
  8. Well-known Tamil writer and Sahitya Akademi awardee Thopil Mohammed Meeran passed away. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1997 for his novel Saaivu Naarkkaali. His other notable works are Thuraimugam, Anju Vannam Theru and Oru Kadalora Graamaththin.
