  1. Justice Madan Bhimrao Lokur, who retired as the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court in December 2018, has been appointed to the Supreme Court of Fiji’s non-resident panel for the duration of three years. The Supreme Court of Fiji consists of the Chief Justice, who is also the President of the Supreme Court, all Justices of Appeal who are also members of the Court of Appeal and others specifically appointed as Supreme Court judges.

  2. International Nurses Day was observed globally on 12 May 2019 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the foundational philosopher of modern nursing. This year it was celebrated with the theme was “Nurses – A Voice to Lead – Health for All”. In 1974 International Council of Nurses established 12 May as International Nurses Day.
  3. Lewis Hamilton won the Formula One Spanish Grand Prix at Circuit de Catalunya, in Barcelona to mark his third consecutive win. Mercedes matched the record of five successive Formula One one-twos as Lewis Hamilton beat his teammate and pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas. The Formula One (or F1) is the highest class of single-seater auto racing in which term word “formula” name refers to set of rules which is to be met by all participants’ cars.
  4. The World number one Novak Djokovic of Serbia defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece with 6-3, 6-4 to win men’s singles title in Madrid Open tennis. With this win he now holds a tie with Rafael Nadal’s record of 33 ATP Masters 1000 titles. He has earlier won Madrid Open in 2011 and 2016.
  5. Kiki Bertens of Netherlands beats Simona Halep of Romania with 6-4, 6-4 in finals to win women’s singles title in Madrid Open tennis. With this triumph she became first woman ever to win Madrid singles title championship without dropping a set. Kiki climbed to fourth in world rankings.
  6. Around 180 member countries, except the United States, amended the 1989 Basel Convention to include plastic waste, during the 14th Meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Basel, Rotterdam & Stockholm Conventions under the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) in Geneva, Switzerland. Came into force in 1992, the “Basel Convention on the Control of Trans-boundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal” is an international treaty that aims to reduce the movement of hazardous waste between the countries.
  7. A group of researchers have unearthed a new ‘rain loving’ snake species in Mizoram and named it as “Smithophis Atemporalis.” The species is reported to be a non-venomous kind and strictly aquatic. The maximum recorded size of the new species is about 655 mm or 2.5 feet. Locally, the species is referred to as “Ruahlawmrul”.
