  1. The 16th Asia Media Summit was organised in Siem Reap province, Cambodia from 12 June to 14 June 2019 to deliberate on many issues pertaining to media & broadcasting industry. The two-day summit was held under topic of Media Digitalization Focusing on Developing Markets. It called for regulation-making to fight against fake news and cyber-crimes. The 15th summit was held in India.
  2. International Albinism Awareness Day (IAAD) is observed every year throughout the world on 13 June with the aim of raising public awareness on albinism and to prevent attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism. This year theme was Still Standing Strong. Albinism is a rare, non-contagious, genetically inherited disorder characterized by partial or complete absence of pigment melanin in skin, hair, and eyes, at birth. UNGA adopted resolution 69/170 on 18 December 2014 and proclaimed 13 June to be observed as International Albinism Awareness Day.

  3. Renowned author Amitav Ghosh was presented 54th Jnanpith Award for his outstanding contribution to enrichment of Indian Literature in English. The 62 years old Kolkata-born author is 1st English language writer to become a Jnanpith laureate. The award was instituted on 22 May 1961.
  4. In Global Peace Index (GPI) 2019 of Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), India’s rank slipped by five places from 136 in 2018 to 141 among 163 countries. Iceland has been at the top of the list since 2008.  Afghanistan replaced Syria to rank as least peaceful country in world. Bhutan topped the index in South Asia with its 15th rank. It was founded by Steve Killelea, an Australian technology entrepreneur and philanthropist.
  5. According to the World Investment Report 2019, released by United Nation Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows to India grew by 6% to USD 42 billion in 2018. India was ranked among the top 20 host economies for FDI inflows in 2017-18. FDI inflows to South Asia increased 3.5% to $54 billion dollars. Established in 1964, UNCTAD is an organ of UNGA.
  6. ISRO Chairman K Sivan on June 13, 2019 announced that ISRO is planning to launch its own space station by 2030.  The project which will enable India to send more astronauts to space will be an extension of the Gaganyaan project. The proposal for the space station will first be sent to the central government for approval after India’s first Gaganyaan mission. The initial plan of ISRO is to accommodate astronauts for 15-20 days in space at an orbit of 400km from earth.
  7. Indian Navy and Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) have signed a contract worth Rs. 1187.82 crore for supply of heavyweight torpedo Varunastra to Indian Navy. The torpedoes will be manufactured at BDL Visakhapatnam unit, in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a Government of India Enterprise under the Ministry of Defence was established in Hyderabad in the year 1970 to be a manufacturing base for guided missiles and allied defence equipment.
