  1. Retired judge of the Supreme Court of India, Justice Madan B Lokur was appointed to the Supreme Court of Fiji as a member of the non-resident panel for a period of three years.  He will attend the August session of the Fiji Supreme Court that starts on August 15th.

  2. Kami Rita, a 49 year old Nepali Sherpa scaled Mount Everest for a record 23rd time. He had started his climbing expeditions in 1994 and in 2018, had set a record of most summits on Mount Everest, crossing the achievements of previous Sherpas.
  3. ‘Mueles’, a painting by Claude Monet, was sold for a record-breaking figure of $110.7 million at Sotheby’s auction in New York. With this, it has become the 9th most expensive painting to have ever been sold at an international auction hour and it created a world auction record for Monet as well as became the first work of an impression artist to cross over $100 million threshold at an auction.
  4. The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), INTACH, (The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) and HCL Foundation signed a MoU for plantation of 10,000 Rudraksh trees in catchment areas of river Ganga Basin in Uttarakhand. The objective of the tripartite MoU is to create a greener ecosystem in the Ganga Basin and to generate income for people residing in these areas.
  5. Recently, India joined a major global initiative called ‘Christchurch call to action’ to combat extremism and terrorism online, and make internet a safe and secure place. This initiative was launched by New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and French President Emmanuel Macron, following the extremist attacks on two mosques in New Zealand in March 2019. A total of 18 countries including the European Union supported the initiative along with representatives from online giants such as Facebook, YouTube, Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Twitter.
  6. The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction conferred Sasakawa Award 2019 for Disaster Risk Reduction to Pramod Kumar Mishra, Additional Principal Secretary to Prime Minister of India. He was awarded in recognition of his dedication to improve resilience of communities most exposed to disasters and for his personal commitment to social inclusion, which as per him acts as a critical principle to reduce inequality and enhances safety net of socially and economically marginalized sections of society.
  7. The Badminton World Federation has launched two new formats of the game namely “AirBadminton” and “Triples”. In contrast to traditional competitive badminton which is an indoor game, AirBadminton is an outdoor game. In Triples format, the match will be played between a team of total three players and the team will mandatorily have one female athlete.
