  1. India has been ranked 112th out of 153 countries in the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Index 2020 released on 17th December, 2019. India was ranked 108th in 2018. Iceland continued to be the most gender-equal country in the world for the 11th time in a row. India has slipped to 150th place on health and survival, 112th on educational attainment and 149th in economic participation. The Global Gender Gap Report was first published in 2006.
  2. India will host the 36th International Geological Congress (IGC) under the theme ‘Geosciences: The Basic Science for a Sustainable Development’ in New Delhi during the first week of March 2020. Popularly known as the ‘Olympics of Geosciences’, the IGCs are a prestigious global geoscientific events held once in four years and participated by nearly 5000-6000 geoscientists from all across the world.
  3. The Confederation of Indian Industry organized the ‘Steeling India 2019: Driving Metal Intensity In Key Sectors’ conference, to increase metal intensity in key user sectors especially in rural India. The meeting focused on Infrastructure and Housing, Automobile and Railways, Water and Irrigation. It also highlighted ways to achieve an optimized supply chain from steel producers to customer demand.
  4. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has launched a dedicated matrimonial site for its staff, which will be managed by the ITBP and only the staff will be able to access it. This is the first-ever dedicated and well-managed matrimony portal among the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). There are more than 25,000 unmarried men and more than 1000 unmarried women in the Force. Raised on October 24, 1962, the ITBP is one of the five Central Armed Police Forces of India.
  5. Vijay Diwas is celebrated on 16th December every year to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in 1971 for the liberation of Bangladesh from Pakistan. Hence, Bangladesh celebrates its independence day on 16th December every year. On this occasion, the three army chiefs reached the war memorial in Delhi and paid tribute to the brave soldiers who lost their lives in the war.
  6. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu presented the President’s Colours to the Gujarat Police on 15th December, 2019. With this, Gujarat became the 7th state police force in India to be bestowed with the honour of the President’s Colours, also called as Nishaan. Earlier, it was awarded to states of Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, Tripura and Assam.
  7. International Tea Day is observed every year on 16th December to draw global attention of governments and citizens to the impact of global tea trade on workers and growers and has been linked to requests for price supports and fair trade. The day is being celebrated since 2005 every year in tea producing nations such as India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Vietnam, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi and Malaysia.

  8. Toni-Ann Singh of Jamaica was crowned as Miss World 2019 at a beauty pageant held in London, UK. It’s the first time in history that black women hold the titles for Miss USA, Miss Teen USA, Miss America, Miss Universe and Miss World. She was crowned by Mexico’s Vanessa Ponce de Leon, the winner of Miss World 2018. The runners up included Ophély Mézino from France and Suman Rao from India. It was the 69th edition of the contest and contestants from 120 countries competed for the title.
