  1. Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved extension of the term of the 15th Finance Commission (XV-FC) up to 30th November, 2019. This will enable the FC to examine various comparable estimates for financial projections in view of reforms as well as new realities to finalise its recommendations for the period of 2020-2025. The 15th Finance Commission has been constituted by the President on 27th November, 2017 in pursuance of clause (1) of Article 280 of Constitution of India and Finance Commission (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1951.

Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested its former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in a multi-billion rupee case related to the award of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import contract. He has served the post of Pakistan’s PM from August 2017 to May 2018. Former PM Nawaz Sharif is already serving seven years imprisonment in the Al-Azizia Mills case.
  3. INS Sagardhwani has set sail from Kochi for a scientific venture called ‘Marine & Allied Interdisciplinary Training and Research Initiative (MAITRI)’. The ship’s mission which was conceptualized by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is in consonance with the Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Safety And Growth of All in the Region (SAGAR)’ to promote closer cooperation in socio-economic aspects, as well as greater scientific interaction.
  4. Christine Lagarde resigned as the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It comes ahead of a decision on her nomination to become head of the European Central Bank (ECB). The former French cabinet minister has been head of the IMF since 2011. If the European Council approves her ECB nomination, she will become the central bank’s first ever female leader, responsible for the euro and the monetary policy of the eurozone.
  5. International Nelson Mandela Day is observed every year on 18th July to reflect on his life and legacy, and to follow his call to “make the world a better place”. This year’s celebration marks 100 years since the birth of Nelson Mandela. United Nation in November 2009 adopted a resolution to celebrate Nelson Mandela Day on 18th July every year. Nelson Mandela was the first democratically elected President of South Africa on 10th May, 1994.
  6. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar inaugurated the 10th Jagran Film festival at the Siri Fort Auditorium in New Delhi on 18th July, 2018. Jagran Film Festival, JFF is an initiative by the Jagran Prakashan Group towards creating a culture of cinema appreciation and is an honest and sincere attempt to create a platform that connects great content with audiences across the country.
  7. Sarabjot Singh shot a 239.6 to bag the men’s 10 metres air pistol gold medal and India’s ninth gold medal at the ISSF Junior World Cup in Suhl, Germany. In women’s 10 metres air pistol event, 14-year-old Esha Singh won the gold medal. India remains on the top of the medal standings with nine gold, nine silver and four bronze with a total of 22 medals.
