  1. The Czech Republic’s Karolina Pliskova defeated United Kingdom (UK’s) Johanna Konta in finals to win women’s singles title at Women’s Tennis Association’s (WTA) Italian Open 2019, held in Rome, Italy. With this win, she achieved the world no.2 position just behind world no.1 Naomi Osaka.
  2. SIMBEX-2019 (Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise), an annual bilateral naval exercise between India and Singapore is being held from 16 May to 22 May 2019. Started in 1993, aims to enhance interoperability, strengthen mutual trust, and build greater synergy to address common maritime concerns among both navies. From India INS Kolkata and INS Shakti will be participating in the exercise.
  3. The 8th Indo-Myanmar coordinated patrol (IMCOR-2019) is going to take place from 20 May to 28 May 2019.  Started in March 2013, it seeks to address issues of terrorism, human trafficking, poaching, illegal fishing, drug trafficking and other illegal activities harmful to interest of both nations.
  4. In his ninth title in Rome, Rafael Nadal (World No.2) of Spain defeated Novak Djokovic (World No.1) of Serbia in finals to win men’s singles title at Italian Open 2019, held in Rome. This is the 81st win of Rafael Nadal. Founded in 1930, the Italian Open is also known as Rome Masters (for male edition) or Internazionali BNL d’Italia (sponsored name) or Italian Championships.

  5. Indonesia’s Joko Widodo has been re-elected as president of the country, beating rival Prabowo Subianto, a retired general. Widodo and his vice-presidential running mate Ma’ruf Amin won the election by a 55.5 percent to 44.5 percent margin over Subianto and Sandiaga Uno.
  6. Pakistan has appointed Mueenul Haq as the High Commissioner to India. Haq, the current ambassador to France, has previously served as chief of protocol at the Foreign Office. The post of High Commissioner to India fell vacant after Sohail Mehmood was appointed Pakistan’s new foreign secretary.
  7. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on May 21, 2019 left on a two-day visit to Kyrgyzstan capital Bishkek to represent India in the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers of Shanghai Co-operation Organization (SCO). Mrs Swaraj will also call on Kyrgyz President Sooronbay Jeenbekov and hold other bilateral meetings. On 9 June 2017, India joined as full member of SCO.
