  1. Major Anoop Mishra has been awarded the Army Design Bureau (ADB) Excellence Award by Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat for indigenously developing ‘Sarvatra Kavach’, a bulletproof jacket that can provide full-body protection against sniper rifle bullets. The awards were conferred at the Army Technology Seminar (ARTECH) held on 23rd December 2019 at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi.
  2. Indian Air Force Chief RKS Bhaduria is on a four-day visit to Egypt from 24th December to 28th December, 2019 to strengthen long-standing relations between India and Egypt. He is scheduled to visit various operational and training establishments of the Egyptian Air Force and interact with senior officials of the Egyptian Armed Forces. During the defence exercise AFINDEX-19 hosted by India, Egypt participated along with other African countries like Niger, Ghana and Uganda.

Harsh Vardhan Shringla, Indian Ambassador to the US and one of the senior most diplomats, has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary for the tenure of two years starting from 29th January, 2019. He will succeed Vijay Keshav Gokhale. HV Shringla is a 1984-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer. He has also served as the ambassador to Thailand (from 2014 to 2016) and high commissioner to Bangladesh.
  4. Indian Railways has opened an Oxygen Parlour at the Nashik railway station, Maharashtra to combat raising air pollution. It aims to provide an experience of breathing clean air to the commuters. The initiative comes with the efforts of the Air Guard in collaboration with the Indian Railways. The Oxygen Parlour is based on recommendation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
  5. National Mathematics Day is celebrated every year on 22nd December to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, who is known for his contributions to number theory, mathematical analysis, infinite series and continued fractions. He was born on 22 December 1887 in Tamil Nadu’s Erode district. He is also known for the Hardy-Ramanujan number – ‘1729’. The Government had also declared the year 2012 as National Mathematics Year.
  6. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has appointed Manuel Marrero Cruz as the country’s first Prime Minister in more than 40 years. Marrero, who has served as the tourism minister for 16 years and is an architect by trade, helped boost Cuba’s economy by making tourism one of the engines of growth. The post of prime minister was scrapped in 1976 by the then-revolutionary leader Fidel Castro.
  7. The Assam Cabinet has decided to request the Centre to amend the Article 345 of the constitution to make Assamese as the State Language of the state forever, excluding the BTAD, Barak valley and hill districts. The State Cabinet also decided to bring a new bill in the next assembly session securing the land rights for the indigenous people. The Cabinet also decided to request the Centre to conclude the Bodo Peace Accord at the earliest.
