The new Rs. 20 denomination note

  1. Second Belt and Road Forum (BRF) which will serve as stocktaking exercise for China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) was held in Beijing, China. It saw participation of 126 countries and 29 international organisations. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s chaired leaders’ roundtable, high-level meeting and thematic forum in this edition of three day BRF event. The first edition was held in 2017. The BRI, (or yi dai yi lu) also called “21st Century Silk Road” or China’s Marshall Plan was announced by China in 2013.
  2. The Indian Army for first time since independence has initiated women induction drive for Soldier General Duty (Women Military Police). Recruitment rallies will be held in Ambala, Lucknow, Jabalpur, Bengaluru and Shillong to test candidates. In 1993, women were inducted as Army officers and were given only Short Service Commission and inducted in combat support branches and support services.
  3. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on April 25, 2019 (World Malaria Day) launched the ‘Malaria Elimination Research Alliance (MERA) India’, a gathering of partners working together to plan and scale up research to eliminate Malaria from India by 2030. The MERA India does not duplicate the international efforts to eliminate Malaria rather complement the efforts on a national scale.

  4. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will shortly issue Rs. 20 denomination banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, bearing signature of Shaktikanta Das, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. The new Rs 20 banknote has motif of Ellora Caves on the reverse, depicting the country’s cultural heritage. The base colour of the note is Greenish Yellow.
  5. US President Donald Trump announced that USA will not abide by and will never ratify Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), a UN treaty aimed at regulating global arms trade. ATT was entered into force in 2014 with aim of regulating international trade in conventional arms (from small arms to battle tanks, combat aircraft and warships). It establishes common standards for international trade of conventional weapons so as to reduce illegal arms trade. India is not a signatory.
  6. The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has set up Suresh Mathur Committee, a 13-member panel chaired by IRDAI’s Executive Director Suresh Mathur, to review regulatory framework on micro insurance, and to recommend measures to increase demand for such products. It was formed because of less than desired offtake of micro insurance products despite of their inherent benefits in the country.
  7. India’s Abhishek Verma bagged a Gold medal in the 10-metre Air Pistol event at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup at Beijing in China on 27 April, 2019. He clinched the top honours with a total score of 242.7 points in the eight-man final. Russia’s Artem Chernousov took home the Silver, with South Korea’s Seungwoo Han finishing with a Bronze. With the Gold, Abhishek has secured India’s fifth 2020 Tokyo Olympic quota.
