  1. The Department of Women & Child Development and Mission Shakti, Government of Odisha in collaboration with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) unveiled a mascot named ‘Tikki Mausi’ and launched a comprehensive state-level communication strategy to spread awareness about nutrition of children and women.
  2. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Delhi for cooperation in research, education and technology developments in science and other disciplines. It will also facilitate access to each other’s libraries and central research facilities.
  3. The 23rd Malabar Exercise, the trilateral maritime exercise between the navies of India, Japan and the US began off the coast of Japan. INS Sahyadri and INS Kiltan will participate from the Indian side. Malabar 2019 exercise seeks to further strengthen India-Japan-US naval cooperation and enhance interoperability, based on shared values and principles. It began in 1992 as a bilateral exercise between India and the United States; later, Japan became a permanent partner in 2015.
  4. Right Livelihood Award 2019 winners are Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, Sahrawi human rights activist Aminatou Haidar, Chinese women’s rights lawyer Guo Jianmei, Hutukara Yanomami Association (Brazil) and its indigenous leader Davi Kopenawa. Established in 1980, the award honours and supports courageous people solving global problems. The award is also known as the ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’ and is presented by the Swedish Right Livelihood Foundation.
  5. Bangladesh Government lifted ban on the export of its national fish – Hilsa – to India prior to the eve of Durga Pooja. Bangladesh, which accounts nearly 75% of the world’s Hilsa production, had imposed a ban on its export to India due to its over–exploitation. The fish received the status of “Threatened Species” under the IUCN red list.

Adille Sumariwalla, President of Athletics Federation of India (AFI), has been re-elected as a member of the Council of International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for another four-year term. Established on 17th July, 1912 in Stockholm, Sweden, the IAAF is an international governing body for athletics with headquarters in Monaco.
  7. World Tourism Day is celebrated every year on 27th September across the world to create awareness on social, political, cultural and economic values in the international community. The theme for this year is “Tourism and Jobs – A better future for all”. The United Nations World Tour Organization (UNWTO) has been celebrating World Tourism Day since 1980.
