- Akademik Lomonosov, the world’s only floating nuclear power unit is ready to start commercial operations in Russia. The plant was launched by Russia on May 19, 2018 at the St Petersburg shipyard. The main objective behind the development is to meet growing electricity needs in its drive to develop oil resources in remote Arctic regions. The plant has 48 MW capacity.
- India topped the standings at the International Shooting Sport Federation, ISSF World Cup on the final day in Beijing on 29 April, 2019, bagging four medals comprising 3 Gold and a Silver. China followed India bagging 2 gold, as many silver and a bronze.
- The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) approved the merger of IndusInd Bank with Bharat Financial Inclusion (BFIL). Post-merger, the BFIL will become a subsidiary of the IndusInd Bank. Bharat Financial Inclusion Limited is a Non-Banking Finance Company, licensed by the Reserve Bank of India.
- On May 1, Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria will take over as Vice Chief of Indian Air Force, after superannuation of incumbent Air Marshal Anil Khosla. RKS Bhadauria was commissioned into India Air Force fighter stream on 15 June 1980 with the Sword of Honour. The VCAS is second-highest ranking Officer in Indian Air Force (IAF). It is a three-star appointment and is held by an Air Officer of the rank of Air Marshal.
- Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has issued an order for a ban on burqa, veil or covering of the face in a manner which prevents anyone from being identified. It follows last Sunday attacks in which more than 250 people were killed. Some Muslim organisations had also come forward and suggested a ban on burqa to help stabilize the security situation. Sri Lanka’s existing anti-terrorism laws were enacted in 1979.
- PepsiCo has sued four Indian farmers on April 29, 2019 for cultivating the FC5 potato variety, grown exclusively for its popular Lay’s potato chips. Farmers believe that section 39 of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001 allows farmers to grow and sell any variety of crop or even seed as long as they don’t sell branded seed of registered varieties. PepsiCo claimed exclusive rights on FC5 by virtue of a Plant Variety Certificate (PVC).
- US Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Special Counsel Robert Mueller two years ago to investigate links between Russia and Donald Trump’s campaign in the Presidential elections, has submitted his resignation. His resignation is effective May 11. Jeffrey Rosen, currently the No. 2 official at the Transportation Department, is awaiting a likely confirmation by the Senate to succeed Mr. Rosenstein.
